Abstract |
How can heritage preservation and regenerative tourism converge to drive economic resilience and sustainability? Traditional tourism models often lead to ecological degradation and erosion of cultural identity. Conversely, regenerative tourism presents an alternative approach that not only enhances tourist engagement, but also emphasizes the protection of cultural and environmental heritage. This study explores the integration of preservation initiatives with regenerative tourism as a strategic framework to revitalize heritage sites and reinforce economic resilience within local communities. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative multi-layered analysis with qualitative ethnographic studies across various heritage sites in diverse cultural landscapes. The sites were selected based on three key criteria: existing preservation challenges, tourism potential, and community readiness for regenerative initiatives. These challenges include the structural deterioration of historic buildings (material decay, structural instability, and authenticity concerns), threats to intangible cultural heritage (traditional practices, crafts, and knowledge systems), and gaps in technical expertise in traditional building techniques and conservation methodologies. This research also developed and applied metrics to evaluate the outcomes of regeneration efforts. An Egyptian heritage site serves as a case study to examine architectural innovations that support regenerative tourism. The findings highlight three critical success factors: community-driven governance models; adaptive reuse strategies that balance architectural integrity with modern tourism needs; and cultural programming that authentically represents local heritage. This integration offers a scalable paradigm for other regions seeking to harmonize economic growth with cultural and environmental sustainability, ensuring that future generations can engage with and learn from their heritage. |
